How to Choose the Right Pet Bed (And Why It Actually Matters)

If you've been scrolling our pet beds section and wondering which one to pick — you're not alone. We get asked about this more than almost anything else. So here's our honest guide.

First: why does the right bed actually matter?

A dog or cat that sleeps well is a healthier, calmer, and happier animal. The right bed isn't a luxury — it's part of how you take care of them. Beyond that, giving your pet their own dedicated sleeping space actually reduces anxiety behaviours (chewing, barking, following you everywhere) because they feel secure.

The three things to get right

1. Size

Your pet should be able to lie fully stretched out in their bed. Measure your pet from nose to tail base when they're lying down and add about 20–30cm. If in doubt, go bigger. A large dog cramped into a small bed won't use it.

2. Sleep style

Does your dog curl up tightly? A donut or cave bed with raised edges is perfect — they love the enclosed, secure feeling. Does your cat like to sprawl? An open flat mat or sofa-style bed works better. Watch how your pet actually sleeps before buying.

3. Easy washing

This is the one people forget and then regret. Pets bring dirt, hair, and odours into their beds constantly. A machine-washable cover is not optional — it's essential. All our beds either have removable zip covers or are fully machine-washable.

Our honest recommendations

For anxious dogs: The calming donut beds with raised edges. The enclosed shape mimics being held and genuinely reduces stress in most dogs.

For cats: The cave tent beds are consistently our most returned-to purchase. Cats are instinctively den animals — give them an enclosed space and they'll use it every single day.

For puppies and kittens: Soft fleece mats with orthopedic cushioning. Young joints need support and warmth more than anything else.

For summer: The cooling ice-silk mats. Not a luxury in warm climates — genuinely important for preventing overheating, especially in flat-faced breeds.
